Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

Over the past 20 years there have been tremendous advances in the practice of psychotherapy. We have a deeper understanding and increased awareness of the inter-relationship of the mind and the body. Our thoughts and emotions impact each other and our emotions and experiences are held in our bodies. Our bodies retain old memories and habitual ways of responding. There is an increased awareness of the importance of working with both mind and body in psychotherapy in order to create deep, lasting change. Often there is a disconnect between our thoughts and our emotional experience. We may know what to do, but not be able to do it, or we know something is not our fault, but continue to feel guilty and responsible. Sensorimotor psychotherapy, created by Pat Ogden, PhD, uses mindfulness to increase awareness of how we process our experiences. It combines verbal techniques with body-centered interventions incorporating theory and techniques from psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, neuroscience, and theories of attachment and trauma.

I incorporate sensorimotor psychotherapy into most of my sessions to varying degrees with a focus on mindfulness, and experience in the present moment as we discuss pastmemories and current issues.
